David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

Robert Menzies did own a movie camera - something that John Howard seemed impressed by in his Howard On Menzies : Building Modern Australia series for ABC.TV. However, it is Gorton (Prime Minister from 1968-1971) who is associated with the re-birth of the Australian film culture.

The Gorton Government increased funding for the arts, setting up the Australian Council for the Arts, the Australian Film Development Corporation and the National Film and Television Training School. - wikipedia

Long before that, Captain John Perry of the Salvation Army had been at the forefront of still and cinematic projection in Australia.

The Limelight Department was the Salvation Army’s pioneering film production and presentation unit in Australia. Between 1892 and 1909 it produced many productions, including 300 films and the major multimedia presentations Soldiers of the Cross and Heroes Of The Cross. The unit also documented Australia’s Federation ceremonies in 1901.

Australia's first dedicated film studio was created by The Salvation Army at 69 Bourke Street, Melbourne, in a room that still stands preserved much as it was at the turn of the century.

By 1895 Perry, with his Limelight equipment, had visited nearly every Corps in Australasia, journeying some 46,500 km, presenting religious illuminated shows to some 522 astounded audiences.

Australia's first film studio | The Salvation Army
Man with a Movie Camera is the simple title of a famous 1926 film by the Russian 'cinema-eye' Dziga Vertov. In the hands and imagination of Vertov and his 'kinok' companions, the motion camera and their city-as-actor film gleanings were a means of modern critical social poetry.

That John Howard should present R.G.M. as also a Modern Man with a Movie Camera says as much about Howard's malnourished view of building a modern Australia as it does about Menzies'.

The Dame Pattie Menzies collection no. 1 consists of a leather camera box with embossed initials R.G.M., a magazine Cine-Kodak 16mm camera, 2 boxes Cine-Kodak Kodachrome 16mm safety Colour film, lens, light filter box and cover, light filter in plastic pouch, 25mm lens, film information cards. The camera belonged to former Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies and was used by Sir Robert for home movies and to record many of his overseas trips.

Menzies & the Art of Supreme Joy

ABC.TV :
Howard On Menzies: Building Modern Australia

Part two, last night, made no mention of Menzies aligning himself with Sir Lionel Lindsay's 1942 polemic "Addled Art", which had as its thesis that modern art was a Jewish conspiracy!

A letter of 1946 from Menzies to Lionel Lindsay is included in Modernism and Australia: Documents on Art, Design and Architecture 1917-1967

Menzies: “You may judge from the tone of this letter, and quite rightly, that I have recently re-read Addled Art with supreme joy.”

For some reason, it was not the NGV Director who addressed the protesters' grievances but Eric Westbrook, by then several years retired from that role and since installed at the new Victorian Ministry for the Arts.

In this photo from that protest, Eric Westbrook is standing to the left; in the centre, representing the artists, is John Davis; to the right, arguing for other related matters is Terry Smith. (A detailed account around this event can be read in Jonathan Holmes' Going Solo: a report on survey exhibitions in Australian public museums in the 1970s.)

mount (n.1)  "hill, mountain," mid-13c., from Anglo-French mount, Old French mont "mountain;" also perhaps partly from Old English munt "mountain;" both the Old English and the French words from Latin montem (nominative mons) "mountain," from PIE root *men- (2) "to stand out, project" (source also of Latin eminere "to stand out;" Sanskrit manya "nape of the neck," Latin monile "necklace;" Old Irish muin "neck," Welsh mwnwgl "neck," mwng "mane;" Welsh mynydd "mountain").

mental (adj.) early 15c., "pertaining to the mind," from Middle French mental, from Late Latin mentalis "of the mind," from Latin mens (genitive mentis) "mind," from PIE root *men- "to think" (source also of Sanskrit matih "thought, mind," Gothic gamunds, Old English gemynd "memory, remembrance;" see mind(n.)). Meaning "crazy, deranged" is from 1927, probably from combinations such as mental hospital.

on Naming a Body of Water

Among the swell of TAR gathered in curiosity around Jean-Luc Godard and his crew that day, standing together opposite Jacques-Louis David's Oath of the Horatii (1784), was the Prime Minister of Australia, Sir Robert Gordon Menzies.

Jean-Luc Goddard, 'Bande à part' (Band of Outsiders) running past David's 'Oath of the Horatii', 1964

Afterwards, he joked to Dame Pattie :
"I did but see them rushing by..."

Sir Robert Menzies officially opens Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra,
1964.
Later that year, Sir Robert on Naming a Body of Water :

"When the time came to give the lake a name, I remember my then minister for the Interior, Gordon Freeth, coming to me and saying, 'There is a widespread feeling that, as you have been in a material sense the father of this lake, it should be named after you.' My reply was prompt. 'Gordon,' I said, 'that is a characteristically pleasing thought on your part, but the lake is not going to be named after me. Do you remember that the original designer of this city and the original creator of the whole notion of a lake was Walter Burley Griffin. So far as I know, he has no memorial in this place. He must have one. I want to have the lake called Lake Burley Griffin.' It was so named and has given Griffin a memorial which no man ever more handsomely deserved."
