David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

Wish-fulfilling Vases of the Void (continued)

see : Sotheby's :
A Sneak Peek into Hong Kong Autumn Sales

HONG KONG.- Sotheby’s Hong Kong Chinese Works of Art Autumn Sale Series 2019 on 8th October will be led by A Highly Important Beijing-Enamelled Pouch-Shaped Glass Vase, Blue Enamel Mark and Period of Qianlong, arguably the greatest example of Qing dynasty art in private hands.

AN ENAMELLED JEWEL, THE LE CONG TANG COLLECTION.
A HIGHLY IMPORTANT BEIJING-ENAMELLED POUCH-SHAPED GLASS VASE,
BLUE ENAMEL MARK AND PERIOD OF QIANLONG
18.2 cm
Estimate upon request
(Expected to fetch in excess of HK$200,000,000/US$ 25,000,000)

This truly extraordinary glass vase, enamelled by imperial command of the Qianlong Emperor in the early years of his reign, is arguably the greatest example of Qing dynasty art in private hands. Enamelled glass vessels were by far the most complex and demanding of all works of art commissioned at the Beijing Palace Workshops, and the current example is the most successful of all surviving examples, in the intricacy of its pouch-shaped form with simulated pink sash tied at the neck, and with its unique and brilliantly enamelled design of a pair of phoenix soaring amidst clouds and peonies, one bud with the blue-enamel mark. Emanating from the legendary collection of Prince Gong, it later passed through the hands of A.W. Bahr and Paul and Helen Bernat, before being acquired by the present owner in October 2000 for a then record price. Its appearance on the international art market now is a moment of celebration.

...for there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

Guggenheim Museum (Director's Cut)

Frank Lloyd Wright with a model of the Guggenheim Museum, 1945.

Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875), a Japanese Buddhist nun, great in many disciplines.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), a great United States architect.

How interesting it could have been if the Guggenheim Building Committee had accepted Wright's initial proposal for an 'enlightenment dome' based on a work by Rengetsu.

Wright explained to journalists at the 1945 Plaza Hotel unveiling of the initial model that his design was in the form of an inverted ziggurat. He emphasised that he saw it as a spiral ascending outward.

Otagaki Rengetsu, whose chosen name means Lotus Moon, designed many of her ceramics as a lotus rising out of the darkness and mud, ascending through the clarifying water toward the moon of enlightenment that ringed the open circle lip of her cups and bowls.

Oscar Wilde, 'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.'

Wright proposed a union of Eastern and Western wisdom-seeking forms. Education moving towards enlightenment. A transparent dome with radiating lotus pad orbs, centred with great jade frog.

At the 1945 press conference, Wright showed the Rengetsu teapot lid inspiration and (in his hands, above) the proposed, stylised, lotus pads transparent dome upon which would sit the great jade frog.

Unfortunately, the Director's Cut was rejected. Instead, the newly self-confident USA opted for an oculus rather than a dome. Preferring to be overseen by the Eye of God and of Providence rather than commit to the self liberation of the many.

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Fosterville Institute of Applied & Progressive Cultural Experience devised the apparatus below for Theatre of the Actors of Regard by a progressive application of the teachings of Hakuin to the monoptic frame (L'introuvable) of Marcel Mariën and a Qing Dynasty coin found in 2014 at Elcho Island.

FIAPCE
Recent speculative research suggests that Ned Kelly may have used a similar Chinese coin from the Victorian goldfields as a muck-around monocle prior to his realisation of the iron mask eyes frame.
Curator of Australian art, Denise Mimmocchi, says Nolan is one of the most significant Australian artists of the 20th century. "He changed the way we look at the landscape and think of the landscape," she says.

"He looked at the landscape in terms of the inner life of the place – he wasn't content with just the appearance of things. His Kelly series is a classic example of how he used myth and legend, and also history and place, to frame how we look at the landscape.

"It's hard to disassociate the way we think of Kelly country from that iconic black mask he painted."
