David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

Leap Year Day : Sounds of Weather

.
We've had a buzz from the BLACK BATS ...

... about this evening's Leap Year Day event at WEST SPACE.
Sounds of Weather

a special performance and installation at
WEST SPACE
7.30pm Wednesday 29 February 2012
Free entry - One night only!

Sounds of Weather is part of an intercultural collaborative project curated by Philip Samartzis (RMIT University, Melbourne) and Christophe Charles (Musashino Art University, Tokyo) titled Borrowed Landscapes. The project explores the effects of weather on the built and natural environment through sound and video recordings and performances. Sounds of Weather investigates the specific weather conditions of each site through fieldwork conducted on the Sumida River, Tokyo; the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, Saitama; and, Bogong High Plains in the Australian Alps. Using sound and video to record these spaces, the project creates an open framework for a range of artists to respond to the weather and infrastructure of environments in Japan and Australia.

Artists include

Christophe Charles (FR/JPN), Kazuyuki Miyamoto (JPN),
Simon Perry, Dominic Redfern, Lizzie Pogson,Philip
Samartzis, Kristen Sharp,
Takasuke Shimazaki (JPN),
Yuko Tsurukai (JPN) and Eri Ujita (JPN).
Below is the image from the Sounds of Weather announcement.

The Vision Thing

.
The leadership struggle within the Australian Labor Party, between the current Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her predecessor the deposed former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, has dominated the News in Australia over the last two weeks. Tomorrow there will be a spill, a vote and a result.

The winner of that will then return to the leadership struggle against the Leader of the Federal Opposition, Tony Abbott.

We've just noticed this book cover and the blog post about it at Letterology. Lincoln seems as relevant as ever.

Whatsmore, if you look closely at the veil of glass that covers this object you may notice there the silhouettes of other regardists, the audience of onlookers standing behind the two formal actors.

Possibly our two lead actors can also see these ghostly presences reflected in front of them, afloat upon Océanie, la mer.

Maybe you, too, are set to sea your own regard in all of this.

Today is Losar : Tibetan New Year

.
May it be a better year for the Tibetan people
24 of whom have self-immolated in the last year
(12 of these since Jan 2012)
to protest against the Chinese government's ongoing repression of Tibetan culture.

Yesterday the exiled Tibetan Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay was interviewed by Emma Alberici on ABC.TV Late Line .

The invite pictured three of the four images reproduced below, from Gonkar Gyatso's My Identity, 2003.

Leonardo Live : The Dead Audience

.
In recent times certain operas by The New York Metropolitan Opera have been broadcast to movie theatres around the world as 'live high-definition transmission performances'.

Today, a Visual Art exhibition gets the same treatment with Leonardo Live from the National Gallery, London.

It's certainly a development of interest to Theatre of the Actors of Regard.

Pierr/oT Lunaire

.
Yesterday's white-on-white post featured a postcard with letter dated 13 February 1904. Same day 108 years ago.

Today, 14th February is St. Valentine's Day, established as such by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD and now, since the time of Chaucer, an occasion for the celebration of romantic love.

This year, 2012, is the 100th anniversary of Arnold Schoenberg's love melodrama Pierrot Lunaire.
Dreimal sieben Gedichte aus Albert Girauds 'Pierrot lunaire' ("Three times Seven Poems from Albert Giraud's 'Pierrot lunaire'"), commonly known simply as Pierrot Lunaire, Op. 21 ("Moonstruck Pierrot" or "Pierrot in the Moonlight"), is a melodrama by Arnold Schoenberg. It is a setting of twenty-one selected poems from Otto Erich Hartleben's German translation of Albert Giraud's cycle of French poems of the same name. The première of the work, which is between 35 and 40 minutes in length, was at the Berlin Choralion-Saal on October 16, 1912, with Albertine Zehme as the vocalist.

from Wikipedia ( full article here )
Pierrot Lunaire is a 20th century favorite in the offices of bLOGOS/HA HA. We regularly play a downloaded version from the thoughtful and generous High Pony Tail ( here ), from an early '70s Hungaraton LP with Erika Sziklay as Pierrot.

Below, for you today, is a performance of Pierrot Lunaire by Pierr/oT of the SLAVE GUITARS.

Here's something similar, a tableau from the later 1800s. Theatre of the Actors of Regard before a set of Golden Guillotine genre painthings, all centred on a cloudy skyscape mind with over-text. (Reckoned to be an early launch site for Theatre du Vide and Yves Kline's later Leap into the Void.)
