David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

There was a Child went Forth

There was a child went forth every day;
And the first object he look’d upon
that object
      he became;
And that object became part of him for the day,
or a certain part of the day, or for many years,
      or stretching cycles of years...

 by Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

detail : Actual Size

In the old age black was not counted fair,
Or if it were, it bore not beauty's name;
But now is black beauty's successive heir,
And beauty slander'd with a bastard shame:
For since each hand hath put on nature's power,
Fairing the foul with art's false borrow'd face,
Sweet beauty hath no name, no holy bower,
But is profan'd, if not lives in disgrace.
Therefore my mistress' brows are raven black,
Her eyes so suited; and they mourners seem
At such who, not born fair, no beauty lack,
Slandering creation with a false esteem:
Yet so they mourn, becoming of their woe,
That every tongue says, beauty should look so.

- William Shakespeare, Sonnet 127

OVERVIEW

On 21 June Sotheby’s will stage a curated evening sale. Bringing together a range of works from across the 20th and 21st centuries, this first-of-its-kind auction will include exceptional paintings, sculptures and works on paper which share one common characteristic – each one is no bigger than the size of the catalogue page on which it is illustrated, in actual size.

“We like the idea of breaking the addiction that much of the art market seems to have developed that bigger is always better. We want to reanimate connoisseurship in different ways, in this case by focusing on exceptional works on an intimate scale”, say Thomas Bompard and Allan Schwartzman, curators of the Actual Size sale.

The auction will bring new perspectives to some of the most celebrated artists in modern history including Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Freud, Fontana and Manzoni. It is often the smallest things that pack the strongest punch.

One hundred years ago, Mr K showed the world his way

And, seventy years ago, below

It was twenty years ago today
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years

Fifty years ago last month, on 26 May 1967,
The Beatles released their astonishing new LP
with an introduction to another band :

It was twenty years ago today
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

One week later, on 4 June , The Jimi Hendrix Experience boldly opened their set at the Saville Club, London, their final gig in the UK, with the same but-go-one-better meta-fiction :

We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
We hope you will enjoy the show
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sit back and let the evening go
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
It's wonderful to be here
It's certainly a thrill
You're such a lovely audience
We'd like to take you home with us
We'd love to take you home

Then they left for the US. Paul McCartney had recommended Hendrix and The Who for the line-up of the Monterey International Pop Festival. From London, England...

The Who ended their set with My Generationwith Pete Townshend smashing his guitar and Keith Moon kicking over his drums as the band left the stage.

Next comes Hendrix. Electric guitar genius. To top The Who finale, to Wild Thing, he lays the black Strat on the stage, kneels and kisses it, simulates fucking it, ejaculates lighter fluid onto it and sets it on fire. He smashes his flaming axe on the stage seven times then tosses its broken remains into the stunned crowd. Fifty years ago today, 18 June 1967.

Six months later, in Australia, kid correspondent buys Eric Burdon's record of that instantly famous, prototype youth music festival.

The people came and listened
Some of them came and played
Others gave flowers away, yes they did
Down in Monterey
Down in Monterey

Young Gods smiled upon the crowd
Their music being born of love
Children danced night and day
Religion was being born
Down in Monterey

The birds and the airplane did fly
Oh, Ravi Shankars music made me cry
The Who exploded into fire and light
Hugh Masakela's music was black as night
The Grateful Dead blew everybodies mind
Jimi Hendrix baby, believe me, set the world on fire, yeah
His Majesty, Prince Jones, smiled as he moved among the crowd
Ten thousand electric guitars were grooving real loud, yeah

You want to find the truth in life
Don't pass music by
And you know I would not lie, no I would not lie
No, I would not lie
Down in Monterey

Three days of understanding of moving with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
Do you believe me, yeah?
Down in Monterey

I think that maybe I'm dreaming
Monterey
Down in monterey
Did you hear what I said?

Vale Rod May

by David Holmgren ( 30 May 2017 )

One of Australia’s ecological farming pioneers, and a close friend, passed away today. Rod May aged 63 died in intensive care after a road accident between Ballarat and his family farm at Blampied 5 days previously. Rod was a 4th generation farmer on 200 acres at the foot of Kangaroo Hills in the prime red cropping country of central Victoria. In the late 1970’s Rod returned to the farm motivated by interest in self reliance, organics and tree crops and “fell back into farming” as something to do in between starting the Central Victorian Tree Planting Co-op and getting elected to the very conservative Creswick Council.

The Landcare movement emerged simultaneously in several regions across Australia in the late 70’s and early 80’s. One of those places was central Victoria and Rod May played a leading roll in it...

Fear of Laughter [ No, seriously! ]

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone;
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.

- opening lines of 'Solitude' by Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Today, in the Rose Garden of the White House ...

Gene Kelly stars as a struggling American artist in Vincente Minnelli's (1951) 'An American in Paris'.

... President Trump announced that he will be withdrawing the United States of America from their commitments on climate change reduction made last year as part of the Paris Climate Accord.
He spoke of his concerns about laughter :

"At what point does America get demeaned? At what point do they start laughing at us as a country? We want fair treatment for its citizens, and we want fair treatment for our taxpayers. We don’t want other leaders and other countries laughing at us anymore. And they won’t be. They won’t be.

I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris..."

Paris 2015 UN Climate Change Conference

Introduction : "Good evening and welcome everyone. I'm Drew Faust and I'm very grateful for all of you joining us here today. For many months we have used the word Paris as a shorthand for the International Climate Change gathering that we are here to discuss today."
( see video here )

President Obama signed the Paris Climate Accord.
But then, the leading actor changed...

"At what point does America get demeaned? At what point do they start laughing at us as a country? We want fair treatment for its citizens, and we want fair treatment for our taxpayers. We don’t want other leaders and other countries laughing at us anymore. And they won’t be. They won’t be.
