David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

1/1

Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours), Stevie Wonder (1970)

A recent FIAPCE acquisition is this card by Ben; and by Philip Corner.

Initially, Ben Vautier produced the card with its printed declaration, author's stage name and date.

JE SIGNE TOUT
BEN   1960

At some stage, Fluxus co-founder Philip Corner has then signed the card with his own given name and added the red seal of his Korean pseudonym Gwan Pok, meaning 'Contemplating Waterfall.' To complete the formalities, and his cheeky Fluxus uberclaim, he has penciled it as a unique edition, 1/1.

THIS LOOKING THING

Another postcard recently received. From P&S at Spare Room 33
(Opening soon : LAWRENCE WEINER : EARLY WORKS)

On the picture side, a circle amid rectangle(s), the West Australian artist Howard Taylor's Day time moon (1997). Plus, a bonus Australia Post orange banding P.O.em

On the verso, Peter quotes Howard Taylor :

The day before this THIS LOOKING THING moon pointer arrived we posted here an image of ("Bring me...) the sculpted behead of Paul Signac on a Block, as Daruma Muralist, as circle and square, as rounded and rect....

Bust of Paul Signac (1863-1935), 1935
by Jan and Joël Martel (Nantes 1896 – 1966 Paris)

At the same time, we encountered this article at Hyperallergic:

At the Montreal Biennial, Lessons in How to Look

Across the city, many works by the 55 artists participating in the 2016 Biennale Montréal deal with the possibilities, limitations, and consequences of spectacle and spectatorship.

Luis Jacob's high pedestalled headless HAND SPACE guillotine-gazer abregardist hugely tickled our fancy. Paricularly, when combined with the reverso bust of Paul Signac.

All just too ]----(plosively funny for words. lots of lollies!

POST CARD

A special pleasure shared by artists is an ease of giving and receiving.

Here, such things are often delivered by Postman Nick, himself an artist and leaver of fruit from his trees, sometimes a drawing, or a letter, a photo... Recently, he delivered this unexpected handmade postcard sent several weeks before the TRUMP ascendency, postmarked Briefzentrum 12 (Berlin-South Postal Distribution Center) and stamped with a yellow TRUMPet on white surrounds - Narcissus.

From whom, by whom? By an obviously skilled hand, it declares itself a DANIUS postcard. Is it from International Melbourne Man of Action Danius K of Slave Pianos and Punkasila ...?

It is. Commissioned by him, the unfamiliar skilled calligrapher, drawer, colourist and image maker is a young Mexican artist-clown who lives in Berlin, Ernesto Lucas. (Hello Ernesto. Thank you!)

Behold the Beheld!

Here again is the Trade Mark of Raphael Tuck & Sons. This time in a far grander presentation than we showed yesterday.

Today, the Trade Mark is set in an elliptical scroll frame, with an accompaniment of four New Angels. The three who carry it follow the directions of the fourth. As we can see, they are taking it in that > direction > over there somewhere >

Clearly, they have now left the moment of the scene above :

Major Look!

What a beaut. Mrs Chook with bonnet and apron, her bird's head umbrella tucked under her wing as she looks at this semi-attached poster. Its lower part is pinned to the fence, the upper part directly to the postcard's image-space.

Lovely back view : behind the poster, behind the fence, behind the semi-detached. Behind this postcard (verso) this verse : to Miss M Bishop,
with loving wishes from PJ.

White on white, G & B, 1910

In Melbourne and Sydney in the early 1970s, certain members of Theatre of the Actors of Regard made it their practice to visit Minimalist and Conceptualist art exhibitions and enquire of the director or a member of staff :
"Oh, is there nothing on?"

Recounted from the other side, one may still hear gallery personnel tell of those who used to come into an exhibition and say :
"Oh, is there nothing on?"

That came to mind while enjoying this artist's response...

...to one stater of the obvious. This is from a U.S. postcard series - THOSE FOOLISH QUESTIONS - published by G & B in 1910.

"It goes without saying that when artists attend exhibitions, they look with exceptional intensity: on the initiative of the Rheinische Post, the artist Günther Uecker and Marion Ackermann, director of the Kunstsammlung, visited the exhibition “Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian: The Infinite White Abyss” together at the K20.
They spoke about the artistic approaches of this trio of avant-garde artists, about their compositions, about German postwar art – and of course, about the color white.

For the curator Marion Ackermann, this is the most radical picture in the exhibition: Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism (White Planes in Dissolution), 1917-18, on loan from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam."
