David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

TAR presents : Twombly, the Ancient Remains

Cy Twombly moved to Italy from the USA in 1957.

His ‘Poems to the Sea’ suite of twenty-four drawings were executed in a single day in 1959.

Twombly lived north of Rome at Bassano in Teverina. “Downstream from the city centre, not far away from the Tiber, lies Lake Vadimo, locally known as the "Pond", described by Pliny the Younger as "a lying wheel with a regular circumference [...] paler, greener and more intense than the sea." - Wikipedia

At the 1988 Venice Biennale he exhibited paintings responding to the Bassano in Teverina “Pond” along with unpainted plaster sculptures. Henry Weatherfield chanced upon that exhibition just hours before leaving Venice, that one time visit. “Paler, greener and more intense than the sea is the see", he later wrote.

Towards an ArithmeTAR of Regard

Melbourne's Lyon House Museum shows this image online ...

... and asks :

Should a painting be explored as a whole or as the sum of its parts? Or both?

How is it composed and structured? How does it set up a relationship with us as the viewer?

These questions will be explored by Dr Mimi Kelly and Corbett Lyon as they analyse four works from the Lyon Collection.

Tri-Angle of Regard (SELF-LIGHT-OTHER)

Theatre of the Actors of Regard enjoyed looking at this Herald-Sun photo from 1962.

Theatre of the Actors of Regard
@heraldsunphoto_retro : 1962. Melbourne recently took a step backwards into the more gracious, less frenzied days of "the gaslight era" when the Lord Mayor, Cr M. Nathan, lit this shapely old gas lamp in Collins St. The lamp, now nearly 80 years old, had been preserved for the city by a private estate and, with enthusiasm all round, the State-controlled Gas and Fuel Corporation co-operated to bring the lamp back into full operation. This they did by laying new pipes and fitting the lamp with a time clock which turns it on at dusk and off at one a.m. daily. Girl at the base is Jenny Boyle, POST cover girl, dancer and gaslight admirer.

Here are a couple of TARmatic others :

Vale the great Glenda Jackson (1936-2023)

We first saw Glenda Jackson as Charlotte Corday in the early 1970s, in Peter Brooks 1967 film of 'The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade'.

The title is usually shortened to Marat/Sade, after a 1963 play by Peter Weiss. She, the film, the play (we even bought the Peter Weiss script) all impressed greatly.

Theatre of the Actors of Regard ] TAR ( has its beginnings t/hereabouts.

Jackson quit acting in 1991 to concentrate on politics – she had joined the Labour Party at 16. In 1992 she was elected as a Labour member to the House of Commons in the UK Parliament where she remained for 23 years, before retiring at age 79.
