David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

Vale Rik Mayall

The Young Ones : (l-r) Rick, Vvvyan, Neil, Mike

- extract below

[Rick starts yelling like a baby, whilst Vyvyan lights a Molotov cocktail]

Vyvyan: It's funny, but being ill makes me lose my usual tolerant and easygoing approach to communal living.

[Vyvyan throws the Molotov cocktail into Rick's bedroom, which explodes]

Rick: Oh, well, how ruddy considerate, Vyvyan. Thank you very much!

Neil: Yeah, thanks, Vyv. That petrol bomb's really cleared my sinuses.

Vyvyan: Why aren't you dead?!

Rick: I'm not prepared to discuss it with you, Vyvyan. You will be hearing from my solicitors in the morning. I'm going to write to my MP.

[takes out paper and pencil]

Neil: You haven't got an MP, Rick. You're an anarchist.

Rick: Oh. Well, then I shall write to the lead singer of Echo and the Bunnymen! (...)

[writing] Dear Mr. Echo....

Regardless, a lesson.

We've been enjoying the Samurai film series on SBS.TV over recent weeks.

In Yoji Yamada's 2004 The Hidden Blade there is a very brief scene ] it's as if we pause for a lesson ( in which a man with hands outstretched closely follows a chook, readying to snatch it. Behind them walks a man with a large wicker basket, also at the ready.

The moment the first man grabs the chook, the second man snares them both!

Then back to the main story...

MUSEUM DANCE OFF ROUND 2:

DEATHRACE 2000!

Both the National Portrait Gallery of Australia and the Otago Museum received random buys directly into round two. They’re also up against each other. When we drew these two as competitors, we didn’t know how much rivalry there was between Australia and New Zealand. So there’s some national pride on the line, as well as a trophy. To put this in context for the American readers, think Yankees and Red Sox (or, Yankees and everyone), Flyers and Penguins, Dunkin’ and Krispy Kreme, me and my jabroni neighbor who mows his lawn at 6:30am on Sundays, and so on…
