David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :
'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

FIFO workers criss-cross Australia.
Usually these are thought of as the fly-in fly-out gouge drones unearthing the nation's great mineral reserves.
FIFO artists are also part of this movement, especially this month. Radiohead perform in Melbourne tonight - O for a ticket - Sigur Ros in Sydney tomorrow. And so many more: the great flower of local bands in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, all very much at large.
FIFO artists and Theatre of the Actors of Regard performers will fly-in fly-out tomorrow for various exhibitions openings. Francis Bacon at the Art Gallery of NSW; Robert Owen at Arc One (Melbourne); Peter Tyndall at Anna Schwartz Gallery (Sydney). Others will be harvesting Peter Cripps at the Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane); Robert MacPherson at Yuill/Crowley (Sydney); Geoff Lowe & A Constructed World at Ian Potter Museum of Art (Melbourne University); Lindy Lee at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery (Sydney).
FIFOs in the know will be seeking out Mitchel Cumming's INVITE ONLY and the work of Samuel Quinteros.

Close on the scandal about Lance Armstrong and other top cyclists taking illegal enhancements, yesterday's Melbourne Cup drew more media comment about the three participating jockeys who have admitted they previously placed bets on opposition horses than about the race itself.
Scent of scandal hangs over Melbourne Cup
TONY EASTLEY: It's the race that stops a nation, but there's a lingering whiff of scandal surrounding today's Melbourne Cup.
This morning there are Fairfax newspaper reports that champion jockey Damien Oliver has admitted to breaching racing rules by betting $10,000 on a rival horse in a race in which he was riding two years ago.
The horse he bet on won. It's posed a lot of questions for Racing Victoria.

Today, Melbourne Cup Day 2012, we thought we might turn the tables (into tableaux). Get the word straight from the horse's mouth, as they say. To do this, we transported a selection of Cup Prospects to view a number of putative art works en plain air.
In the scene above, it looks as if it might be the artist-critic Jeff Makin appearing somewhat anxious as he awaits the critic's judgement.
Shocking a field of foreign stars, Green Moon, trained by Robert Hickmott, won the two-mile classic by a length from Fiorente and Jakkalberry, with Kelinni fourth.
Green Moon started at $20. Fiorente started at $31 and was the third Cup runner-up for trainer Gai Waterhouse. The unfancied Jakkalberry started at $81

BUT TO PRAISE COLVINIUS
It was a black tie and evening gown affair in the office of bLOGOS/HA HA last night when past and present staff gathered around the telly to honour one of our battler inspirations Mark Colvin aka Colvinius (Twitter) as he delivered the 2012 Andrew Ollie Lecture.
We were not disappointed.
