David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

Voided Into Being < La merde à la mer !

.
Recently, we blogged (here) about Piero Manzoni's renowned Merda d' artista aka Artist's Shit aka Künstlerscheisse aka Merde d'Artiste of May 1961.

In relation to the above, we further offer this 1898 sequence of four photos by the Parisian art gallery owner Maurice Joyant showing Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec voiding into being his very own merde à la mer.

These come from the website The Esoteric Curiosa (here) where there are also other photos of Toulouse-Lautec that may interest, as well as detailed information about the performance shown below.

Architecture Aims To Fill Void

.
From last week's Business pages of The Age :

MAB's general manager, commercial and industrial, Richard Johnston, said the first building aimed to fill a void in the Docklands office market. MAB's Aquivista, opposite The Quarter and the new Lend Lease strata office building were designed to cater for small businesses requiring up to 500 square metres.

At the other end of the market were the big buildings with tenants such as ANZ, NAB and Mercer. ''The gap is in the middle area of the market,'' he said. A company that needed up to 4000 square metres would probably have 200-250 employees, so ''that's a big business''. Mr Johnston said MAB was looking at rents in the high $300 per square metre.

Then what might this young boy's numbers tumble add up (or down) to?

Mal E at Ephemeral - male has blogged today about that most renowned bog in a can - Piero Manzoni's Merda d' artista aka Artist's Shit

There's one coming up for sale. The production verb that Christies use in their Lot Description is 'executed'. Executed in 1961, this work is number twelve from an edition of ninety. Perhaps Manzoni merded them into being! ("Macbeth doth murrrrder sleep.")

Yes, it's a classic. Like that other classic, Surfin Bird by The Trashmen, two years later in 1963.

But today, let's all sing instead this favorite version of the naughty schoolboy :

A-well-a everybody's heard about the merde
M-m-m-merde, merde, merde, m-merde's the word
A-well-a
merde, merde, merde, the merde is the word

A-well-a merde, merde, merde, well the merde is the word
A-well-a merde, merde, merde, m-merde's the word
A-well-a merde, merde, merde, well the merde is the word
A-well-a merde, merde, m-merde's the word
A-well-a merde, merde, merde, m-merde's the word
A-well-a merde, merde, merde, well the merde is the word
A-well-a merde, merde, m-merde's the word
A-well-a don't you know about the merde?
Well, everybody knows that the merde is the word!
A-well-a merde, merde, m-merde's the word
A-well-a...

bLOGOS/HA HA junior staff are fartoo easily amused by such things. Words about murdes and terds and stuff

No wonder they guffaw at this old French postcard.

Project Project's project

.
To date, this is our sub-editor's favorite caption for 2012 : Project Project's project
(The Age, 11 May 2012)

Yesterday, Fairfax Media, the owners of The Age, announced huge staff cuts (around 20%) and projected the possibility of their newspapers (including The Age, Melbourne and the Sydney Morning Herald) going completely online if this restructure fails to improve its financial situation.

This as the Australian mining magnate Gina Rinehart, currently the world's richest woman, has confirmed that her recent acquisition of Fairfax shares now give her 19% of that company. A strong opponent of the mining and carbon taxes, she is now seeking three seats on the Fairfax board of directors.

The editorial independence of Fairfax media is in question. (read articles via here).

Wrapped For Return

.

A recent image bundle from Eric B included what appeared to be someone looking at the Mona Lisa inside a paper wrapped parcel. The JPEG had no info, only a number file. Online research ( here ) indicates this is not from the theft episode of 1911, rather it's the 1945 return of La Giaconda to the Louvre from its safe keeping in the countryside during World War 2.

An unwrapping, overseen.

Paintings in parcels: wrapped, returned and regarded.

The image above reminds of another such reportage photo, from 1986, that of Patrick McCaughey looking into an open public locker at Flinders Street Station, Melbourne; regarding therein a wrapped parcel that a tip-off had claimed would contain the NGV's stolen Picasso painting, Weeping Woman. It did.

TAGHLAY @ ACCA

Berlinde de Bruyckere : We Are All Flesh
opens today at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne.

BERLINDE de Bruyckere's father was a butcher. During her childhood, there in his shop in Ghent, Belgium, she would watch as strong men hauled great slabs of dead animals into the fridges, where they were hung on hooks. The carcasses were butchered into smaller cuts and displayed for the day's trade. The little girl Berlinde, who loved to draw, was arrested by these images.
