TAR : Let Us Paint the Face of the Public

I have seen, and heard, much of Cockney impudence before now, but never expected to hear a coxcomb ask two hundred guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face.

    - John Ruskin writing about James Whistler (1877)

A pot of paint has been flung in the face of the public.

    - Camille Mauclair (1905) riffing on Ruskin; commenting on the 1905 Salon d'Automne by the artists Louis Vauxcelles dubbed as Les Fauves (The Beasts)
