Yesterday, Fairfax Media, the owners of The Age, announced huge staff cuts (around 20%) and projected the possibility of their newspapers (including The Age, Melbourne and the Sydney Morning Herald) going completely online if this restructure fails to improve its financial situation.

This as the Australian mining magnate Gina Rinehart, currently the world's richest woman, has confirmed that her recent acquisition of Fairfax shares now give her 19% of that company. A strong opponent of the mining and carbon taxes, she is now seeking three seats on the Fairfax board of directors.

The editorial independence of Fairfax media is in question. (read articles via here).
