David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

The Field : Theatre of Auditory Regard

Last night we listened to the ABC.TV documentary
Finding The Field.

To a hurlyburly of 1968 imagery, it starts with

not Jimi Hendrix' Crosstown Traffic (1968)
Gioachino Rossini's William Tell Overture.
Then Jerry Lewis mimes over-typing-self with Title
to LeRoy Anderson's The Typewriter, as we in '68

arrive through the arch of the modernew NGV to Tchaikovsky's Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy

and reflect there on Mel Ramsden and Ian Burn
to a J S Bach organ composition.
Fifty years pass and staff install The Field Revisited
to Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

Exeunt to Happiness Does Not Wait.

Polly Borland: Polyverse

Polly Borland: Polyverse presents new and recent work by the celebrated Australian-born, Los Angeles–based artist. While perhaps most widely known for her portraits of prominent figures including Queen Elizabeth II and musician Nick Cave, many works included in the exhibition explore more surreal imagery in which magnetic visual qualities embody a distorted, punkish humour. Natasha Johns-Messenger

Water-Orb 2018

Ian Potter Sculpture Court, Caulfield Campus

MUMA is pleased to launch our Ian Potter Sculpture Court Commission with a new work by Natasha Johns-Messenger, Water-Orb 2018.

In this work Johns-Messenger uses simple optical physics to activate a chasm between what we think we see and what we know. Employing an ocular-like form, the work beckons our observation of a dynamic body of water that appears to defy gravity as it flows.

Supported by MUMA Contemporaries.

We are as shadows...

Watching the parade-to-execution of a Prime Minister, on TV an hour ago, we screen-snapped this one image of PM Malcolm Turnbull (centre) and his ally Arthur Sinidinos (left) as they passed by an artwork of John Coburn, all lit by camera flashes.

As he approaches the Liberal Party Meeting Room for the leadership vote, the Prime Minister knows he will be overthrown by former PM Tony Abbott's revolt of reactionary avengers.

Arthur Sinidinos, who was instrumental in Turnbull's ascendency over Abbott three years ago, is seriously ill with cancer.

The people's Parliament House Art Collection is very poorly represented online. We needed to search elsewhere to confirm details of the John Coburn artwork : appropriate to this Theatre of the Actors of Regard procession of shadows...
its title is Death and transfiguration.

And the vote, the result? The Liberal Party has today elected this person, Scott Morrison, as Australia's next Prime Minister, leader of the Government COALition.

We imagine Yves Klein being somehow involved :
all of a sudden reappearing, coming off the bench
all these years later to take a screamer from nowhere.

clear and direct

We are always pleased to receive the generous gift that is each new blog post from Marcus Bunyan at Art Blart.

From his current personal offering, we are still chewing the cud of his introductory last sentence, below :

Paris in film 2018

These photographs were taken on a trip to Paris in 2017 using my Mamiya twin-lens C220 medium format camera shot on Kodak Ektra 100 colour negative film.
They are only basic jpg scans of the negs, full frame, no cropping, and I have colour corrected as best I can, noting that all digital images look different from computer monitor to monitor – one of the perennial hazards of looking at work online. They have not been sequenced at the moment.
The photographs seem to hang well together as a body of work. I would love to get good scans and print some of them.
Through their clear visualisation, the photographs speak directly to the viewer.
