David Jones, artist and poet (1895-1974) begins his PREFACE TO THE ANATHEMATA :

'I have made a heap of all that I could find.' (1) So wrote Nennius, or whoever composed the introductory matter to Historia Brittonum. He speaks of an 'inward wound' which was caused by the fear that certain things dear to him 'should be like smoke dissipated'. Further, he says, 'not trusting my own learning, which is none at all, but partly from writings and monuments of the ancient inhabitants of Britain, partly from the annals of the Romans and the chronicles of the sacred fathers, Isidore, Hieronymous, Prosper, Eusebius and from the histories of the Scots and Saxons although our enemies . . . I have lispingly put together this . . . about past transactions, that [this material] might not be trodden under foot'. (2)

(1) The actual words are coacervavi omne quod inveni, and occur in Prologue 2 to the Historia.
(2) Quoted from the translation of Prologue 1. See The Works of Gildas and Nennius, J.A.Giles, London 1841.

TAR, huh, yeah What is it good for

'TRIENNIAL', AT NGV INTERNATIONAL,
BY GILES FIELKE

Buried within the question recently explored by Felicity D. Scott, ‘Who is the festival for?’ is the rapidly fading possibility of the public.  ...

Giles Fielke is working on a PhD presenting a counter-modern history which looks at the artist organisation of discrete images, in the Art History department of The University of Melbourne. In particular his research focusses on works by Hollis Frampton and Harun Farocki and the question of the search. He is a founding member of the Artist Film Workshop <http://artistfilmworkshop.org> and regularly publishes writing on contemporary art and film

TAR skat | Matrix Music

Such a pleasure this morning to listen again to Andrew Ford's Music Show celebration of the centenary of Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996).

[Verse 2:]
Oh dear I wonder where my basket can be
(So do we, so do we, so do we, so do we, so do we)
Oh gee I wish that little girl I could see
(So do we, so do we, so do we, so do we, so do we)

Oh why was I so careless
With that basket of mine?
That itty bitty basket
Was a joy of mine!

[Chorus:]
A-tisket
A-tasket
I lost my yellow basket

Won't someone help me
Find my basket
And make me happy again?

[Verse 3:]
(Was it green?) No, no, no, no
(Was it red?) No, no, no, no
(Was it blue?) No, no, no, no
Just a little yellow basket
A little yellow basket

Living Standard

The Australia Council for the Arts has released
new research which shows the average income of a practising professional artist in Australia declined by about 4 per cent between 2008 and 2015.

Theatre of the Accountants of Regard
How much money do artists make?

•   In 2014-15 Australian artists earned a gross income of $48,400 on average — about 4 per cent less than when the survey was last conducted in 2007-08

•   But they tended to generate their income from a variety of sources

•   On average they made about $18,800 from their creative work, $13,900 from art-related work (usually teaching), and $15,700 from a non-arts-related job

•   A third of the artists surveyed said they were happy with that balance, while the rest wanted to spend more time creating

•   All types of artists face challenges meeting their minimum income requirements, but visual artists earn amongst the lowest incomes of any artists, despite being one of the most highly educated groups in the workforce.

Sign Field

We've been watching old episodes of Sign Field.

Raise The Standard was directed by 前川五嶺 [1805-1876] and features Daikokuten as the standard bearer. A great favourite.

Carry On Luggage has a similar theme. TAR-TV describes this episode as, 'The year before Flying High! - First Flight of an idio with an ideo'.

Both these episodes are revisited in the mayhem of
Parade Day.

BAR click NETT click NEW click MAN click BAR NET NEW MAN

Modern Merican Painted Canvas didn't always float free to be seen in Independence Daze on the staged walls of Theatre of the Actors of Regard.
Various photos of Barnett Newman in his studio show him with heavily-suspended stretched right-angles of canvas anchored by chains before during and after the paint.

These proof sheet photographs are from the 1965 studio portraits of Barnett Newman by Ugo Mulas.
In the mid-1940s Newman painted a small number of mostly untitled circle/sun motifs. One was clue-titled Pagan Void. After that, the vertical line motif ("zip") on the field (of colour) motif predominated the play.

His 1948 consolidation work - one vertical zip centred on a vertical format canvas - he titled Onement (at one out of atonement). The son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, he had studied philosophy in New York and it all showed. Soon came By Twos (1949).

We do wonder about the presence/influence/role/
dynamic of the suspension chain verticals 'outside'
on the painted verticals 'inside'?
Photos of the early exhibitions of these artworks, such as at Betty Parsons gallery, show them still in obvious suspension, not 'free floating'.

Ditto when shown in Melbourne in 1967.
We conclude this now with the Sight Gag song as...

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

HA HA HAKUIN Enso Border Patrol Tour

How many decades have we had a magazine print of this Hakuin enso on the office wall here?

Never funnier than now! Sad!

The text under the office print says:
When you forget yourself you become the universe.
Hakuin (1685 -1768)

.  .  .  .

Online, under the same enso image, another (similar) text and commentary :

No space in the ten directions,
not one inch of great earth

The phrase is from a koan in which a monk asks Master Pa-ling,
"Are the views of Zen masters the same or different from what is taught in sutras?"
Pa-ling answered,
"When a rooster is cold, it flies up into a tree; when a duck is cold, it dives under the water".

In the twelfth century a Chinese monk, Wei-chao, added a verse to this koan :

A branch of plum blossoms is enshrouded by rain,
The golden one smiles without speaking.
A bright noon shines on the Water Dragon Palace,
While the moon and stars dance and laugh, dance and laugh:
No space in the ten directions, not one inch of great earth

Hakuin's ink was rather wet and his brushwork quite loose, causing the characters to become solid masses of ink next to his egg-shaped enso

Looking online today, in anticipation of "Audience" the exhibition, we were surprised to see the above installation image. Not as anticipated, with all those apparently black photos...

Some quick image searching reveals it is in fact a commercial generic stock photo : wtphoto?!

We've been following Ross Coulter's Audience
project from day one (15 August 2013) at Conical, Fitzroy...
